Even Penelope Cruz' Boobs Are Uneven.
You old-schoolers know I've had my own personal cage matches with fashion magazines, and in reading my story all this time you've no doubt seen that the effects of our cultural intoxication with Hollywood on young girls and women can go a lot deeper than just simply causing body image issues.
See, this thing, this obsession with perfection gets into your blood like some kind of a virus and infects your perception of everything about yourself. It makes you doubt and fear, and can even make you stumble through conversations because you're so nervous you'll just sound stupid. I see it everyday in girls, their withdrawing and putting up walls and convincing themselves they're "bad" or "not good enough" either in whole or part. I also see them overcompensating in ways, and know from experience this is simply the result of some unconscious piece of self fighting against the would-be identity annhialation.
But some girls get confused in their desperate fight for their lost sense of control and empowerment, and thus make the wrong choices with permiscuity, social suggestibility, etc. Fortunately, I went the other way and took on things others thought were impossible in order to try to reclaim a sense of self-acceptance and empowerment; 24-credit hour semesters while working full time, a couple years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (a mixed martial art that's foundation is ground fighting, not something many women do), eventually marathons, triathlons... Ironman. I made the best out of some pretty damaging media-conditioning because I was lucky to have always had supportive women in my life, but in spite of having had these great role models, you see I still fell into the covergirl trap.
I see girls every day who don't have such positive role models, and I cringe to think of them standing on the front lines without any cover. Because of this I've kind of made it a mission of mine to put information out there that might help immunize girls before they get sucked in like I did (heads up, those Bratz dolls should all be burned - disgustingly overly sexualized 'teen' dolls marketed to 6-12 yr-olds?? OMG!), as well as those who already have been sucked in and are perhaps still struggling to get out.
It's been a long road for me. I've studied and researched and educated myself into oblivion, I even teach a graduate course in adolescent behavior and identity development because of all this, though here I am at 33 years old just now starting to live completely free of the media programming. And I wasn't even one you might consider "at risk", but that's our mistake as a society. All girls are at risk. They should all be told the truth - even Penelope Cruz' boobs are uneven, baby... you're beautiful.

not interested...buy other magazines!
FE-Lady, um, great? BTW, it's ALL the magazines, just a good bit of education to have for anyone who cares about the young women in their lives.
ok, iron wil, i love you but our relationship is OVER! penelope cruz is PERFECT. her boobs are not uneven. i've studied them for years, including the several movies she's appeared topless. those babies are without flaw.
please stop spreading LIES!
damn you!
That makes me feel sick - they even blurred-out Cameron Diaz' massively cut abs (clearly not suffieciently feminine). Excuse me while I go and wash my eyes out with soap.
TRY ACTUALLY GROWING UP IN HOLLYWOOD!!! i swear if it weren't for triathlon, i wouldn't be alive. i'm in way better shape and far more healthy in my mid 30's than i ever was in my teens or 20's when i binged and purged as often as i changed underwear. still though i gotta agree with fe-lady. maybe i'm just evolved to not fall pray to the mags and ads and billboards (probably because i shoot them and i know how fake they are), but my stack of reading consists of competitor, her sports, outside, and runners world mags. but even in those publications, i still see women objectified....
I love it when you post these. Then I make sure to show my 13 year old daughter how not so perfect her favorite stars are!!!
Thanks Wil :)
This was great! I love how reality steps in. Maybe these girls should also go to a photo shoot where they also see how the models are pinned, pimped, sprayed, and don't even look real BEFORE they step in front of the camera, much less in the retouching part afterwards.
It's interesting to meet "a model" in real life - they don't look like models. They usually have flat faces and flat bodies - which photograph better so the photographers and style artsist and create shadows where they need them. Us 'regular people' only have shadows where nature gave them to us :)
I definitely have been sucked in and still trying to get out. However, an 8 hour training day sure helps to beat it out of you!
Patricia - awesome! My husband has done the same for me, as I wouldn't have found these sorts of things on my own. He's in advertising (though he doesn't work for Cosmo or a retouching agency like this) and is a photographer, so knows all the tricks of the trade. Whenever he runs across one of these "even perfection isn't perfect" things, he sends them along - cool huh?
Partner, it's the truth that hurts the most, and only a friend could break it to you - sorry man ;)
Monica, it's good to hear that you've moved beyond, this post is for those who either haven't, or are at risk. The "sports" magazines are by far better, but as you note they're not perfect either - I'm afraid those also are retouched to a degree.
Lbteba/Lauren - Oh yeah, and even the guys aren't 'perfect', they retouched them as well. I thought it was amazing to see the before picture and think, hey, they look fine to me, then scroll to the retouch and THEN look at the original again. Almost every single time I thought the original picture was uglier then. I can't help but think there's a connection to how we then look at ourselves in the mirrors.
Rural-Girl - man you said it, you ready for our big one on Saturday sister!?
I know its not an us versus them thing, but yes, even the guys have these kinds of issues. We just correct it in a hormonal male aggressive way :-)
I wonder if my favorite tri-athlete picture, the one with the Xterra tri-chica covered in mud from head to toes (she is flat chested by the way) is touched up a lot? Food for thought.
and I agree with the Kahuna :-) Penelope Cruz is beautimous, I'm not smart enough to figure out her boobs are lopsided! Not sure I really care....
It's definitely a polluted world! I've spent the last 12 years trying to get out and have been sucked back in on occasion along the way. Yet I still subscribe to the magazines...not smart.
Funny, I was just looking at that site before I moved over to check out my blogs. It's crazy! And even though I know they airbrush the crap out of those pictures, I still find myself looking at them in awe. Triathlon has given me so much confidence, I wish that I'd started a long time ago.
Thanks Tracy for posting these. I made sure to show Kelly Clarkson to my 8-yr-old daughter, who looks fantastic in the before by the way.
I hear you on the Bratz dolls - OMG I just about choked the first time my niece showed me hers. I know Barbie's not much better, but at least they tried to give her real jobs for a while... whatever happened to Dr. Barbie? I very recently saw what could only be called "Slut Barbie." She even had on clear plastic hooker heels. (I couldn't believe it - I picked it up and showed it to the people I was with to make sure I wasn't hallucinating it.)
Bratz dolls are banned from our house. And if I'd had my way, Barbie would have been too, the Beyotch. Any dad of a daughter who can read "Reviving Ophelia" without having the bejeezus scared out of him has no heart.
truely amazing how they do that all that with touch ups!
rockon`
No matter how much society gives lip service to successful women, the reality is that women are valued for their beauty and not much else - at least as far as the media is concerned. So, women are not just dealing with vanity and "does my butt look big in this" but with proving thier worth - to themselves and others- when they don't fit the standard of beauty (which, double whammy, NO ONE DOES). Obviously, I could go on and on - thank you for continuing to post on this and being an advocate for the current generation of young girls and women.
Ironic that you choose to use a non-triathlon photograph with makeup (that really doesn't look like you) for your profile image. Not judging, just an observation.
Holy crap! As though she wasn't skinny enough, they had to cut down the size of her WAIST?! That's f-ed up. :(
believe it or not your photo shop posts are some of my favorite anywhere.
Hey guys :) yeah it's crazy how different some of these pics look, that Kelly Clarkson one is nuts, they took like 15 lbs off her at least. Did you see the face and butt shave? MAN! And speaking of man, I bet the guys don't always love being held up to that James Bond ideal either as Wes eludes - suave, cool, rich and powerful, oh not to mention gorgeous and built. It's just one of those things I think young people really need to be educated about - Hollywood isn't reality - so they don't feel inadequate and let that affect them into the future.
Phoenix, you're absolutely right as well - ever notice how the first compliment we give young girls is about how cute or sweet they are, yet for boys it's always merit based? "Good job Bobby!" "You're so smart/strong etc." I think you'd really like the book Greyhound mentions, Reviving Ophelia (Grey I use that book in the grad class I teach btw! Another book is called A Fine Young Man, that's the flipside story for young men, and the other book I use in the class. Good stuff!).
And regarding my profile pic, since it's me, I don't know how it could not look like me, I guess you just don't ever really see me looking over my shoulder like that, but the picture is just a few years old. Also, my blog isn't just about triathlon, so why would I use a triathlon picture? That's a part of my life but it's not what I define myself by. You'll notice the brick wall in the background... THROUGH TH3 WALL ... and I'm not against makeup you understand, I'm against the whole airbrushing half of someone's ass off and passing it off as a benchmark for people everywhere to judge themselves and others by.
You sound like the greatest teacher ever - I wish I had such a role model as I was getting messed up.
Still rooting for you at Wisconsin!
Growing up, I heard that magazine photos would be "airbrushed" - but until recently - I had no idea to what extent. Wish I would have known about this craziness when I was a teenager - when I would have given anything for a super skinny body, blonde hair and blue eyes. It is great you are spreading the word for today's young girls - and with any luck, maybe a few publications will actually listen...
wil-
never can say i've "moved on." similar to an alcoholic, someone with an eating disorder can always relapse into old behaviors. recovery is humbling, and i'm humbled every day that i get up and swim or bike or run to maintan a healthy body instead of the way i used to destroy it to keep up with some ideal i had. i think that's where i still hold the most pain, in thinking about the damage i did to my body back in the day. whenever someone comments on how bad running is for your body or how triathlon breaks the body down, i reply "hey, it's cheaper than prozac and doesn't break your body down nearly as bad as the stomach bile that used to burn my insides after a good purge!!!" to each is own on their road to health and sanity i suppose...
keep up the posts. we all need them no matter how far we think we've come.
immoo. woooooo hoooooooo!!!!!
Yaaah!
We want more posts about Penelope Cruz's boobs!
Oh wait, did I miss the point AGAIN?
Gotta work on that reading and not just looking a pictures thing!
(loved it)
